Pienza, on the Via del Gladiatore walking or cycling

This itinerary starts from the historic center of Pienza,  a Renaissance city commissioned by Pope Pius II as a model of an “ideai” city. From the main gate, follow the signs far “Vitaleta”, almost immediately arriving at the Romanesque parish  church of Corsignano. From here  we turn left towards the  “Terrapille” farmhouse and enter the set of the film “The Gladiator”. We go down the long descendent and just because the farmhouse we turn right to immerse ourselves  in the boundless expanses of the hills of the Val d’Orcia.

We follow the path and cross a dirt road that we take by turning right, until we reach a path on the left: we take it passing the gate (pedestrian crossing allowed) and we reach the pretty “Vitaleta Chapel“, one of the symbols of the Val d’Orcia, where the panorama extends to 360 °,enjoying the beautiful surrounding landscape .

We retrace our steps until we reach the dirt road again, which we continue far a while until we find a downhill path to the right with an indication tor Pienza. We take it and go down to the valley floor, and then go up again. We take a dirt road and turn left following the signs tor “Ammannati”. Thepath bring us to a panoramic road which we follow until we reach the main gate of the city.

Da Siena: Take the SS2 “Cassia” towards Rame – Exit at San Quirico d’Orcia an follow the signs far Pienza.

From A1: Exit a Chiusi – Montepulciano, follow the signs far Val d’Orcia/Pienza
