Garibaldi gravel – Itinerary

From Rapolano you can start from the “piazzione”, where is located the gate, or from the other Points where are located the two modern and frequented thermal establishments: the Antica Querciaiola and the Terme San Giovanni. These two places are the essential location for young and olds, where to spend a really good time having a relaxing hot bath, enjoying healthy mud or having a hydro massage session. The direction of travel is Asciano but soon, when you reach a bridge over the railway, you turn towards Serre di Rapolano which can be seen, with its historic buildings and the white expanses of travertine, lying at the foot of the hill. From Serre di Rapolano we take the road of the caves of travertine, a precious stone that is still being extracted today. The view of the processing sites is surprising with an impressive scenographic effect. From the caves we proceed toward the Val di Chiana along the coplanar of the highway, where you can easily cycle up to Rigomagno Scalo, before facing a short and spectacular stretch at 20% gradient (it is recommended to do it on foot) that leads to the medieval village on top of hill and surrounded by fourteenth century walls. The next off road, takes you toward Poggio L’ Aiole, from where you can arrive to dam of the Calcione, beautiful lake hidden by the woods. A stop at the lake is a must before heading to the medieval castle of Modanella and then to Poggio Santa Cecilia, the ghost town but still structurally intact. Rapolano is really near, and in the town there is the embarrassment of choosing between a bath in the spa and a well-deserved bruschetta with precious olive oil. When in doubt, both hypotheses can be considered
